2001年に作られ、2003年に世に送り出された題記の歌を訳詞・作曲したご本人の随想録を著した本を読んだ。ヒットしたのがだいぶ以前のことで今や記憶も疎かになっていたが、この歌が外国の作者不明の詩であり欧米では結構知れ渡っていること、そして著者が妻を亡くした友人のためにこの哀悼歌が作られたことをこの本を通して知った。曲が完成するまでの紆余曲折の背景や著者の思い入れの回想が述べられていて、今にして新鮮味を覚えた。そして今だ歌い継がれていて、名曲であることをしみじみと想い起こした。読後記録に文中にあった原詩と、本とは別にYouTubeサイトの中で一番お気に入りの歌唱動画を以下に添付する。
